# Add participants to your plan

> Add existing members, invite new people, or import participants from a CSV.

Use owner or admin access in employer view. Your Deferred Compensation plan must be active and available to your company. In navigation, look for your configured plan name.

## Add an existing team member

1. Open your plan → **Participants** and select **Add participant**.
2. Choose **Existing team member**.
3. Select the **Team member** and **Worker category**.
4. Complete **Service start date** when required and check **Eligible for** your plan.
5. Review the details, then select **Add participant**.
6. Check the participant list and the person's resulting status.

Use the service date and category agreed for that person. Changing these details can affect how the plan applies to them.

## Invite a new member

1. From **Add a participant**, choose **Invite new member**.
2. Enter the required name, work email, country, employment, and plan fields shown.
3. Check the email address, worker category, service start date, and eligibility choice.
4. Select **Send invite**.

This sends an email invitation to join your company. Share [Join your team from an invitation](/members/join-your-team) if the recipient needs help. Check both the invitation and participant records after sending.

## Import several participants

From the standalone **Add a participant** page, select **Import CSV**. The add-participant screen inside annual intake does not include this tab.

1. Open **CSV format guide** and select **Download template CSV**. Use this plan's participant template, not the team or retirement template.
2. Keep all 11 column headers in order, even when optional values are blank. Use no more than 500 data rows.
3. Enter work email, first and last name, a two-letter residential country code, one of your plan's worker-category names, a service start date in `YYYY-MM-DD` format, and a positive annual salary in USD. This participant import accepts dollars and cents, without currency symbols or thousands separators.
4. Set `eligibleForPlan` to `yes` or `no`. A blank value counts as `yes`, so review it deliberately. Department, position, and nationality values can be blank; use a two-letter country code if supplying nationality.
5. Avoid commas and line breaks inside field values. Quoted commas are not supported.
6. Upload the file, review the preview and errors, then check the valid participant count before confirming the import. Importing sends invitations.
7. Read the created, skipped, and error results. Duplicate emails and already-imported participants are skipped. Check existing records before retrying only the rows that need correction.

## Understand the result

Depending on the plan's eligibility timing, an eligible participant may start as **Pending entry** rather than **Active**. Adding a participant does not create an award.

For upcoming grants, follow [Annual intake](/employers/deferred-compensation/annual-intake). If you add a participant from the intake's updates screen, the add/invite action is saved separately; leaving the intake form does not undo that action.

If someone is missing from the existing-member selector, check whether they already have a participant record and whether their company membership is active. If the screen rejects a date, country, or eligibility choice, follow the error or [contact support](/contact-support).
