# Import team members from a CSV

> Prepare the right template, review rows, and check import results.

Company owners and admins can import people from **Team Members**. For retirement-specific additions, use **Retirement Benefits** → **Members** so the import applies the retirement requirements.

Importing can send invitation emails. Check the intended company and recipients before confirming.

## Prepare the file

1. Open the relevant team or retirement page and select **Import CSV**.
2. Select **Download template CSV**. Use the template from that screen; retirement requires the full set of columns.
3. Replace the example rows with your actual recipients. Keep the column names and order. Use the country codes and date format shown in the template.
4. Save the file as CSV, with a header and no more than 500 data rows. Split a larger list into smaller files.

Check email addresses and roles carefully. Admin access should go only to people who need to manage the company. The role column also applies to retirement imports, so review it there as carefully as in a team import.

## Avoid common format errors

| Field | Format to use |
| ----------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Country and nationality | Two-letter country codes, such as `US` or `GB`. |
| Role | `member` or `admin`. |
| Employment start date | `YYYY-MM-DD`. |
| Annualized salary | A positive whole number without currency symbols, commas, or decimals. Check the salary currency shown on the import screen. |

Retirement rows require employment start date, nationality, and annualized salary. Keep optional columns in their template positions, even if their values are blank. If your screen supports `payrollSchedule`, use the exact active schedule name in the template's eleventh column; a blank value uses the default schedule.

Avoid commas and line breaks inside names, departments, or other field values. Quoting a value does not make an embedded comma supported. If an accurate value cannot fit the import format, add that person individually or contact support.

## Preview and import

1. Upload the CSV through the import screen.
2. Review the preview, including names, country, roles, and any salary or payroll fields shown.
3. Inspect rows with errors. Correct the original file and upload it again when needed.
4. Check the number on **Import … members**. Only valid rows are included.
5. Confirm the import and wait for the results.

## Check every result

Review created, skipped, and error results individually. A successful import does not mean every row was accepted. A skipped row may identify someone who already exists; read the reason before trying again.

If you retry after an error, first check the team and pending-invitation lists. Correct and retry the affected rows instead of assuming the whole file failed. [Manage pending invitations](/employers/manage-invitations) after import, and [check retirement enrollment](/employers/retirement/manage-members) separately when applicable.

For a rejected header, download a fresh template. For a blocked country or missing required information, resolve the recorded details or [contact support](/contact-support); do not substitute an incorrect country to pass validation.

To create a custom cadence or resolve an assignment, see [Manage and assign payroll schedules](/employers/manage-payroll-schedules).
