Your retirement plan can make employer-funded contributions subject to a vesting schedule. Check the plan details shown during enrollment and the vesting information on your dashboard.

Read the figures

In Employer match vesting, where shown:
  • Vested contribution amount is the employer contribution amount the display identifies as vested.
  • Unvested contribution amount is the employer contribution amount the display identifies as not yet vested.
  • Next vesting milestone shows the next displayed amount and date, or Fully vested when there is no remaining milestone in that display.
These figures are about employer contributions, not your whole account balance. A smaller line such as Today’s value or Value on shows the valuation for the indicated date. Contribution amounts and current investment values can differ.

Check your schedule

Use the information control beside Employer match vesting and the plan summary to read the schedule that applies to you. A cliff schedule reaches its vesting point after the stated service period; a graded schedule vests over time. Use the period shown for your plan rather than assuming a standard number of years. If the section is absent, do not assume that employer contributions are missing or that nothing is vested. Its visibility depends on the plan and contribution data. Ask your administrator to explain the schedule if it is unclear.

Before making plans around a balance

The vesting display is not a withdrawal button or a promise of an immediate payment. Ask your administrator how the plan’s terms, your service dates, and any employment change affect you. See Prepare before leaving your employer. For a figure you think is wrong, note the displayed date, plan, and milestone and ask your employer or support to check it. Do not substitute a different plan’s schedule or a rough calculation for your account’s records.
